More than 60 human rights organizations signed a letter to the French President Emmanuel Macroninviting him to pay compensation to Haiti For the unbearable amounts that the country has paid to France as a “compensation” for the loss of property – including slaves – after its independence.
The letter, dated Tuesday, comes as activists in Haiti – a country with the lowest GDP per capita on the American continent and facing gang crisis and minimal international support – are seeking billions of dollars.
“The wealth removed from Haiti has delayed the country’s economic growth for decades and has created a vicious circle of foreign aid and chronic debt dependency, which lasts to date,” the letter said. “It’s been a long time for France to recognize and repair this injustice.”
Among the signatories are diaspora organizations and in favor of compensation from the United States, Africa and the Caribbean.
Emmanuel Macron had stated in April that he would create a joint French -aeite committee to examine the “painful” past of the two countries, but did not mention compensation.
