US President Trump has given Russia to agree on a ceasefire with Ukraine until Friday or face duties.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to meet with Ukrainian counterpart Volodimir Zelenski if the necessary work has been done in advance, the Kremlin said on Monday.

“I would like to remind you that the president himself does not exclude such a meeting after the necessary preparation at the expert level is completed and the required distance is covered,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

However, he added that the preparatory work has not yet been done.

Zelenski called for an immediate encounter with Putin last week after the Kremlin chief expressed hope for further peace talks and said the Russian troops were “going through the front line”.

“We know who makes the decisions in Russia and, therefore, Ukraine is once again offered to go beyond technical conversations – not for exchange of statements, but for a meaningful meeting at the leader level,” Zelenski wrote in a post on August 1.

Peskov made the above statement before the end of the ultimatum given by US President Donald Trump on Friday to pursue a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine otherwise threatened to impose sanctions on Moscow.

Trump initially gave Russia a 50 -day deadline, but reduced the margin to 10 days last week after saying he was “frustrated” by Putin.

Trump also said that his special envoy, Steve Whitkov, would visit Russia in the coming days. Peskov said that “we are always happy to see Mr Whitkov in Russia.”
