The government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unanimously approved the removal of Attorney General Galli Baharav-Miara, which plays a decisive role in the corruption case under close investigation in the country.
The decision comes amid strong criticism within Israel and the growing US pressure to resolve the political crisis and ending the war in Gaza.
The dismissal of Baharav-Miara, who often “openly” “open” the government’s policies, marks one of the most decisive steps in Netanyahu’s long-standing efforts to remodel the country’s court scene.
It is also expected to lead to a confrontation between the elected government and the Israeli Supreme Court, which will examine and rule on the legality of the Baharav-Miara dismissal.
Immediately after the vote on Monday night, the opposition party demanded it to prevent it.
In a statement earlier today by Gali Baharav-Miara’s office, its possible removal is described as “illegal”, while stressing that Netanyahu “seeks a legal adviser to comply with the demands of the government and legalize illegal actions”.
According to a plan issued last week, the cabinet argued that the move was necessary because the government had no confidence in Galli Baharav-Miara.
It is worth noting that the “spark” that “triggered” the country’s political scene was the visit of US special envoy Steve Witkov to Israel at the weekend.
Whitkov visited Tel Aviv to discuss the ending efforts of the war.
On Saturday, he met with hostage families to inform them that the US is now seeking a more meaningful agreement on the liberation of hostages, which would require Hamas to release all those who are still held captive, in return.
Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad have recently “triggered” mass protests in Tel Aviv after posting videos of two male hostage -ranges begging to be saved.
The Israelis were terrified by the video of these two hostages, 24 -year -old Eviatar David – who was depicted naked in the middle and above and boned on – and 22 -year -old Rom Brasslavsky, who was seen lying on a mattress, begging for food.
Voting for the cabinet takes place “as our hostages die in the tunnels, as Israeli society is disintegrating,” said Yair Golan, an Israeli opposition politician, in a demonstration outside Kneset on Monday afternoon.
“In this new video, his eyes are erased,” Braslavsky’s mother, Tami, told Saturday’s protest in Tel Aviv.
“It’s helpless, like me,” he said.
The Israeli government, Golan said, “does not deal with the release of hostages, ending the war … Israel’s security is not concerned.”
