Russia has been offered to make some territory concessions, according to Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkov on Sunday.

Vladimir Putin is said to have been offered to stop his attack and freeze the front line in Ukraine if Volodimir Zelenski agrees to hand over control of the eastern Donetsk region in Russia.

Many news agencies also reported that Putin asked Ukraine to retire from Donbas, which consists of Donetsk and Luhank.

Witten hinted that when Trump and Putin met, the territorial concessions about and the five eastern areas were “on the table”.

What do we know about Donbas?

The region has been a source of soil skirmishes between Ukraine and Russia since 2014.

Donbas is mainly Russian, and after the occupation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, Russian -speaking forces gained positions there in a war that never ended.

Shortly before he began his invasion in 2022, Putin recognized all of Luhansk and Donetsk as independent of Ukraine, not just as limited states created by Moscow -backed attorneys.

“Freeze” of the first line?

On Saturday, many media, such as the Financial Times, Bloomberg and Reuters, said Putin told Trump that will stop fighting in the rest of the first line In Ukraine if Zelenski delivers Donbas’ complete control.

As the BBC map below shows, This would require to deliver part of Donbas that Russia has not yet taken control. This would also include the majority of Zaporizia and the peninsula in the south – which Russia has occupied.

Now, Whitkov states that “all five” areas were under discussion between Trump and Putin and was always “at the center of the agreement”.

Witten: “Russia made some territorial concessions”

Whitkov discussed the territory in CNN – and in particular the five areas he described that it was always the “The focus of the agreement”.

It is recalled that Russia illegally annexed Crimea in 2014, while the areas of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizia and Hersona were annexed after referendums considered internationally as a result of fraud in 2022.

“The Russians made some concessions at the negotiating table for all five of these areas,” Witten said.

He added that the Donetsk area is a topic of “important debate” – a debate that, he said, will take place on Monday at the White House.

“Let’s hope we can move on and make some decisions immediately at that moment ‘, Witten added.
