Security guarantees, territorial issues and the message that Germany can lead in Europe. These are the priorities of the German agenda for Ukrainian in Washington.
For Germany, Ukrainian is a matter of “existential significance” and the war in Ukraine is regarded as a European war and therefore German. For Germany, Russian aggression is regarded as a highest threat to the country’s security and has in this context review its post -war doctrine.
Chancellor Mertz has set the goal of making Germany ready in the coming years, with the “most powerful conventional army in Europe”, launching historical investments to upgrade its armed forces.
With this “arsenal”, Germany claims a leading role in Ukrainian, clearly in favor of Kiev and Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski. For Germany, the key priorities in Washington are as follows:
1. The issue of ‘robust’ security guarantees. Germany would, at least officially, want the US to have a guarantee role in Ukraine next day, while Washington seems to be pushing Germany for a bilateral deal with Kiev during the Bild newspaper.
2. The issue of territorial concessions. For Germany, the acceptance of committed, that is, the granting of territories without security guarantees could lead to other similar territorial claims for displaced (European) territories in the future.
3. Germany also wants to send the message that it can play a leading role and that Europeans are united.
For Berlin, however, the big dilemma is whether it will eventually be called upon to send German troops to Ukraine on a future peacekeeping mission, on the Macron proposal, breaking another post -war red line.
Although this seems to be out of discussion so far, however, Vice -Chancellor Lars Kleningbale of the Social Democrats and other top Christian Democrats executives, such as Roderich Kiseer, considers it inevitable if Germany is inevitable.
Foreign Minister Johann Vandeful, however, said that this would “be very borne” by the German Armed Forces, as they are already funding and staffing the critical NATO armor in Lithuania.
