The large settlement of the occupied West Bank approved by Israel yesterday is “unacceptable” and is a “violation of international law”, 21 countries today estimate, including Britain and France, in their joint announcement.
“We condemn this decision and strongly call for it to be annulled immediately,” the foreign ministers of these countries said, including Canada, Spain and Italy. The text also bears the signature of Kaya Calas, the head of European diplomacy.
The plan to build 3,400 houses on the West Bank will divide this territory, undermining the territorial continuity of a future Palestinian state.
The measures taken by the Israeli government “undermine our common will to ensure security and prosperity in the Middle East,” the ministers continue. They also call on the Israeli government to “put an end to building settlements” and “to lift the financial restrictions it has imposed on the Palestinian Authority”.
Britain also called on Israeli ambassador to London today for explanations.
Israel’s “E1 plan” was also condemned by the UN on Wednesday.
Except for East Jerusalem, attached to Israel, about 3 million Palestinians live on the West Bank, alongside about 500,000 Israeli settlers. The settlement is considered illegal by the UN, based on international law.
The settlement of the West Bank, Palestinian territory bordering Jordan, continues since 1967, under all Israeli governments, from the left to the right. It intensified into Netanyahu, especially after the war in the Gaza Strip began in October 2023. The controversy – sometimes bloody – between the local Palestinians, the Israeli army and the Jewish settlers, also increased.
