Ten years after her famous phrase-“we will succeed”-about Germany’s ability to accept hundreds of thousands of refugees, former Chancellor Angela Merkel believes that Germany has made significant progress in the integration of immigrants.
“It’s a process. But so far, we have achieved a lot,” Merkel said in an interview with ARD public television for a documentary to be broadcast today.
“And whatever needs to be done must continue to be done,” he added.
On August 31, 2015, Merkel used these words after it became known that 800,000 refugees were expected in Germany that year and thousands were still on the way to Hungary.
Merkel said she knew it wouldn’t be easy.
“For me it was clear that it would be something really demanding,” he said. At the same time, she pointed out that she was surprised at how often her phrase is made as criticism.
He said that she simply wanted to show that, although Germany was confronted with a great mission, she had her hopes on the people of the country.
Merkel does not believe that Germany was burdened by her decision.
“I don’t think. Germany is a strong country,” he said. “In general, I was convinced that Germany could manage it.”
The former Chancellor noted that the alternative would be to prevent refugees from coming to Germany by force. “I would never be willing to do that,” Merkel said.
After all, however, Merkel sometimes confuses herself because she did not do more for people in the field in 2012-13, when the civil war in Syria was already in progress.
