More than 6 out of 10 French people want to dismantle the country’s parliament and hold new elections, according to an IFOP poll on LCI TV released on Wednesday.
Specifically, about 63% of French voters are in favor of holding new elections, while Prime Minister Francois Bayrou is struggling to avoid the collapse of the minority government.
The IFOP poll was conducted online in a sample of 1,000 people on August 26.
Bairo’s minority government seems more and more likely that he will not be able to win the vote of confidence he himself, after three main opposition parties said they would not support him on September 8, due to his plans for sweeping cuts in the budget.
Political uncertainty has hit the French shares and bonds this week.
It is noted, however, that any decision to dismantle the parliament must be taken by French President Emmanuel Macron, and IFOP poll said that 51% of citizens believe that Macron would not dismantle parliament.
Macron’s alternative to the dismantling of Parliament, if Bayrou loses his confidence vote, would be to set up a new government.
