In an attempt to alleviate the tensions caused by Danish security services that US citizens are involved in secret influence operations in Greenland, the US leading diplomat in the Scandinavian country said Greenland has the right to determine its future.
Mark Strochus met with Danish and Greenland officials in Copenhagen on Wednesday, after Copenhagen invited him to explain the Danish public broadcasting report, which was reported by Dr. Greenland.
The US Foreign Ministry said in a statement late Wednesday that Stroch had a “productive debate” with Danish officials and reiterated Washington’s commitment to strong links with both Denmark and Greenland.
“The United States respects the right of the Greenland people to determine its future,” the US Foreign Ministry said.
He added that the US government does not control or direct citizens’ actions and refused to comment on information issues.
Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in the acquisition of Greenland for strategic reasons and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve this goal.
Greenland Prime Minister Yen-Frenterick Nielsen, speaking to DR commented: “We are a partner, we are ally and we expect the game’s diplomatic rules. We expect that international law and sovereignty will be respected. “
