Several studies have begun after posting a video by a Spaniard in Kenya, in which he appears to throw beer on the proboscis of an elephant, causing the anger of social networks.
The Spaniard was recorded in a wildlife refuge to drink from a tusker box, a popular local beer, before giving the rest to the elephant.
“Just a tusker with a friend with tusks,” he wrote in a clip posted on Instagram, which was later deleted from his account after a strong reaction by the Kenyans to the comments.
The BBC analyzed the video and managed to confirm its authenticity. The landscape and a well -known elephant suggest that the video was shot at Ol Jogi Conservancy in the central county of Laikipia.
A member of the staff who contacted the BBC at the Private Wildlife Refuge was shocked by the behavior and said the videos would be forwarded to the “competent authorities”.
“This should never happen. We are a refuge and we cannot allow this, “said the employee, who was identified only as Frank.
“We don’t even allow people to approach elephants,” he added.
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is also investigating the incident, as Paul Udoto’s spokesman at the BBC said.
The man involved does not use his name in his social media accounts, who all have a variant of the phrase Skydive_kenya.
In another video shared on Instagram on Tuesday, we see him feed two carrots and then saying, “It’s time for beer.”
The videos on Instagram caused hundreds of critical comments – with some calling for the expulsion of the man – before the reports were withdrawn.
The elephant to which the beer was given is large in size, with long tusks – one of which is particularly characteristic as it is damaged.
From other images and videos posted online, it fits in with the description of BUPA, a friendly male in Ol Jogi, whose photo is often shared by visitors.
Bupa was rescued by a massive massacre of elephants in Zimbabwe in 1989 and was transferred to the shelter when he was eight years old.
Ol Jogi hosts about 500 elephants and is considered one of the pioneers to restore orphaned animals and release them back to nature.
The man appearing in the beer videos, who describes himself as “Adrenaline Address” in Tiktok, had posted a video on Monday in which he appears in the nearby Ol Pejeta Conservancy shelter to feed a rhinoceros with carrots.
“He also violated our rules, as he did not have to touch the rhinoceros because they are not pets,” said Thige Njuguna of Ol Pejeta in the BBC.
He confirmed that the rhinoceros in the video came from their natural shelter, adding that Ol Pejeta does not host elephants.
Dr. Winnie Kiiru, a biologist and defender of the Elephants by Kenya, described the tourist’s behavior as “unfortunate” as he endangered his life and elephant.
“About 95% of elephants in Kenya are wild and it is wrong to have social media publications that give the impression that you can approach them and feed them,” he told the BBC.
The incident happened just a week after the recording of a group of tourists preventing the migration of the Gune to Maasai Mara in Kenya during the annual wildlife migration – one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in the world.
The viral video showed visitors jumping out of the jeeps, accumulating on the river and forcing the groans to enter the waters full of crocodiles -by attracting the wrath of the public.
Following the incident, the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife announced stricter rules, directing travel agents to enforce the park’s rules, ensuring that visitors remain in the vehicles other than the specified areas.
He also pledged to improve marking in all wildlife parks and intensifying visitors’ training on security rules.
The migration of the Grouss to Maasai Mara attracts thousands of visitors each year.
