Eastern Libya’s strongman Khalifa Haftar has announced his candidacy for the December 24 presidential election in a televised speech.
“I am announcing my candidacy in the presidential election, not because I am running for power, but to lead our people to glory, progress and prosperity,” he said.
Just yesterday, the son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, also announced his candidacy.
Despite the public support of several political formations in Libya, as well as foreign forces in the conduct of the December 24 elections, their holding remains doubtful, as the conflicting political groups have differences over the rules and the timing of the elections.
An international conference in Paris has agreed to impose sanctions on anyone who tries to disrupt or prevent elections.
With less than six weeks to go before the election, no agreement has been reached on the rules and who will implement them.
