The European Union’s foreign ministers meet in Copenhagen today at an informal session where the main axes of action to support Ukraine and the development of European defense will be held.
The head of European Union foreign policy Kaya told reporters today that it is not possible to imagine the return within the Union Russian assets frozen due to the war in Ukraine unless Moscow pays compensation.
“We may not be imagined that … if … there is a ceasefire or peace agreement these assets will be returned to Russia if (the Russians) have not paid compensation,” Callas told reporters before an EU foreign ministers meeting in Copenhagen.
The EU says Russian assets worth about 210 billion euros have been frozen in the EU based on sanctions imposed on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine.
Ukraine and some EU countries, including Poland and the Baltic countries, have called on the EU to seize assets and use them to support Kiev.
But France and Germany-as well as Belgium that holds most of the Russian assets-reject these appeals.
They indicate that the EU is aiming for a specific purpose future profits from assets to repay the support for Ukraine and question whether there is a legal basis to seize them.
Diplomats say that public debate is now focused on how money could be used after the war in Ukraine stops.
