Norway has signed a $ 10 billion agreement to acquire at least five anti -submarine warships from the United Kingdom, with Oslo talking about its biggest “defensive investment” to date.
The UK Ministry of Defense said the agreement on the construction of Type 26 frigates is the largest value the country has ever made, adding that it would support 4,000 jobs across the country “until the 2030s”.
Type 26 frigates will be built at the Bae Systems shipyards in Glasgow, where eight warships are already being built for the country’s Royal Navy.
“This £ 10 billion agreement reflects our plan to change,” said UK Prime Minister Kir Starmer. “Creating jobs, promoting growth and protecting national security for employees. The export of the world’s top Type 26 frigates will do just that, supporting well -paid jobs across the United Kingdom from trainees to engineers. “
It is estimated that the project will support 432 companies, including 103 in Scotland, 47 in the northwest of England and 35 in west Midland.
The agreement marks the strengthening of the United Kingdom’s long -term strategic relations with Norway, in which a common fleet of 13 frigates will operate in northern Europe.
Eight of the frigates will be British and “at least” five will be Norwegian, with the joint company designed to “significantly enhance NATO’s northern wing”.
“This historical defense agreement deepens our strategic cooperation,” said British Defense Minister John Chili. “With Norway, we will train, try, prevent and – if needed – we will fight together. Our Navy and their own will function as one, leading NATO, with this agreement installing more world warships in the northern Atlantic to hunt Russian submarines, protect our critical infrastructure and keep both our nations safe. “
