A reserve lieutenant general of the Ukrainian secret service SBU has been arrested as he tried to leave his country illegally while fighting the Russian invasion, Ukrainian authorities said.

The lieutenant general was stopped at a border crossing with Hungary. The officer presented forged documents that showed he was not recruited for military service, said the State Investigation Office of Ukraine in Kyiv. The officer declared his military rank as an individual. The lieutenant general was arrested, authorities said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had fired two SBU brigadiers from his military ranks, without giving a reason for his decision, in a video message.

One of them was the most recent head of the SBU in the Kherson region in southern Ukraine, which is now occupied by Russian troops.

“I do not have time to deal with traitors,” Zelensky said, praising the efforts of the rest of the SBU staff fighting in the war against Russian military forces.
