European citizens propose greater cooperation and unity than Member States in order for the EU to face current challenges in defense, security and economy.

According to the Eurobarometer, published today, almost 90% of Europeans want a greater unity among Member States, while a strong majority, reaching 77%, believe that the EU needs more means to meet global challenges, with this figure reaching 81% in Greece and 85% in Cyprus.

To reinforce their position in the world, Europeans report defense and security (37%) as priorities, as well as competitiveness, economics and industry (32%).

“European citizens want Europe to focus on security and the economy. They look forward to the EU for stability and await a strong and unified European voice in today’s uncertain world, “said European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, adding that” our priorities and the next long -term EU budget must therefore allow the EU.

Divergences in priorities

There are, however, divergences among European citizens in terms of the priorities of the “block” according to the geographical location of their countries. For example, citizens from northern and western Europe, such as Germany, France, Ireland and Denmark, believe that the EU should focus on defense and security, while citizens in Greece (49%), Bulgaria, Italy and Portugal, respectively, should be prior to competitions. 42% Cypriots consider priority to combat poverty and social exclusion, the Swedes emphasize the role of the EU in terms of democracy and human rights, while Spaniards in education and research.

Transparency is also of primary importance, as 91% of citizens (96% in Greece and 94% in Cyprus) believe that the European Parliament should have all the information necessary and the means to effectively control European spending. 95% of respondents in Greece agree that funds should only be granted provided that Member States respect the rule of law and democratic authorities.

A strong majority of 73% of Europeans (66% in Greece and 71% in Cyprus) believe that the EU offers stability to Member States. Protection of peace and enhancement of security is proposed by respondents in Greece and Cyprus (45% and 39%, respectively).
