Twenty people were killed Thursday night in an attack on an illegal gold mine in northern Burkina Faso, locals said today.
“Dozens of gunmen on motorcycles attacked the Kugdigwin mine near Barga, a community in Namedenga province,” a resident told AFP.
“Unfortunately, we counted 20 dead and an equal number of injured,” who were taken to Kaya Regional Hospital, he added.
Another resident confirmed the attack, citing 22 dead. He claimed that the perpetrators “were armed and opened fire on the workers” of the mine. Among the victims were women and children, he added.
A hospital source at the Regional Hospital said that about 10 injured people were transported there while the rest are being treated at various other health centers in the area.
In the past three weeks, about 80 civilians and soldiers have been killed in Burkina Faso in attacks attributed to armed jihadists.
