Turkey’s permanent delegation to the United Nations officially announced with verbal renovation in the UN Member States and state-executives the candidacy of its permanent representative, Ambassador Ahmet Yildiz, for the position of UNHCR.

The election of the new High Commissioner will take place at the 80th Summit of the UN General Assembly, based on a proposal by Secretary General Antonio Guterres and will cover the years 2026 to 2030.

Ankara in verbal decline emphasizes that the claim is taking place at a “critical turning point” for the UNHCR, amid increasing displacements and serious financial pressure.

The text states that “forced displacement has reached historical records” and that the organization is “more necessary than ever” for protection and constant solutions.

It is said that Turkey is currently hosting “more than 2.5 million Syrians under temporary protection and about 160,000 applicants for international protection, recalling that at a certain stage it supported nearly 4 million displaced”.

It is also emphasized by Turkey’s humanitarian action, “from the hospitality of Syrians to the support of the Rohingya and the organization of the World Humanitarian Synod in Constantinople”.

Mr Yildiz is a career diplomat, served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey and a member of the Turkish National Assembly.
