US President Donald Trump “probably” meet with Ukrainian counterpart Volodimir Zelenski said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio of Israel where he is, to express the “steadfast support” of the US.
Trump “had many telephone conversations with Putin, many meetings with Zelenski and possibly (will meet) once again next week in New York”, where the UN General Assembly will take place, Rubio said.
The US president is still hoping to negotiate a peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine, which will also be accepted by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“He will continue to try. If peace is possible, it will succeed, “he added. “At some point the president could conclude that this is not possible. It has not arrived there yet, but it can reach this stage, “Rubio stressed.
The US minister also reiterated Trump’s statements, according to which Russia has lost 20,000 troops only in July.
The Republican welcomed Putin in August in Alaska, the first time the Russian president met with a western leader after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. A few days later Trump had talks with Zelenski and European leaders.
“If in one way or another (Trump) he releases or imposes sanctions on Russia saying ‘stop (trying)’, then one will not be able to play the role of the mediator to end the war,” Rubio underlined.
