Compared to last year, more Americans now believe that the United States is overwhelming Israel in Gaza war, according to an survey by independent Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
Specifically, 53% of the Democrats responded that the US provides excessive support to Israel, compared to 40% last year. A similar increase is recorded in the independent, with 42% agreeing, eight points over 2024.
On the contrary, almost half of the Republicans estimate that Washington “adheres to the right balance” in its support for Israel. Last year, under Biden presidency, 40% of Republicans said the US was not supporting Israel enough, while this year, only 14% retain this view,
The figures published on Thursday is based on a research with a national sample of 2,148 adults in the US, conducted from mid -July through the end of July via Ipsos Knowledgepanel. The results have an error margin of 2.2 percentage points.
Guided mainly by democratic and independent, more Americans are now saying that the United States is overly supported by Israel, a total of 37% this year, compared to 30% last year. Only 10% of all Americans involved in the survey said the US is not enough to support Israel.
25% of respondents said that the US “adhere to the right balance” in their support for Israel, and about the same percentage replied that it was not certain. At the same time, 40% of Americans believe that the US does not provide enough help to civilians in Gaza, compared to 30% last year.
For decades, US military aid to Israel has been a matter of almost inter -party consensus. The US has offered Israel over $ 200 billion in military aid from World War II.
That amount increased sharply last year, as Israel intensified the war in Gaza after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. While from 2019 to 2023 the US provided $ 3.3 billion annually in military aid, in 2024 the support reached $ 6.8 billion.
The Biden government had approved billions in Israeli aid packages, while the Trump government continued this support, even abolishing a Biden era memorandum that attempted to set boundaries in the missions of weapons in countries where there was a risk of human rights.
Chicago Council’s research has specifically examined Americans’ views on military aid in Israel. It was found that more than 4 out of 10 democratic and independent believe that the US provides excessive military assistance, while it only believes 20% of Republicans.
A poll by Quinnipiac University in August showed that 60% of registered voters oppose the mission of more US military aid to Israel, which increased significantly from the 41% recorded in the first month after the war began.
The percentage of Republicans who believe that the US does not provide enough military assistance to Israel has fallen from 34% last year to just 12% this year, while almost half of the Republicans now believe that American aid is “at the right level”.
The support of the Americans in the establishment of an independent Palestinian state remained stable, with about half of adults in favor. Despite the majority of Republicans, their support in a Palestinian state increased to 35% from 27% last year.
At the same time, more and more countries, including US allies, have expressed support for the recognition of a Palestinian state. France has announced that it will recognize a Palestinian state, as well as Belgium within the month, while Britain and Canada have announced that they will be recognized under conditions.
