The US president, Donald Trumpannounced on Friday that he would host the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the White House on September 25 and expecting to enter into trade and military agreements.
“We are working on many trade and military agreements with the president, such as a large-scale Boeing aircraft market, an important agreement on the F-16s and the continuation of the F-35 talks, which we expect to be completed positively,” he wrote on Truth Social.
It is noted that after the revelation of Erdogan’s meeting with Donald Trump Junior, Turkish opposition leader Ozgur Ozel argued on Friday that the Turkish president had asked his son of the US President to arrange a meeting with his father.
Erdogan had last visited the White House in 2019, during Trump’s first term, with which he has since maintained a relationship with ups and downs.
Although they maintained close personal ties during the Trump Presidency (2017–2021), this period was marked by strained bilateral relations due to the differences for Kurdish fighters in Syria and Ankara’s relations with Moscow with the acquisition of the S-400.
Turkey enraged the Trump government in 2019 by buying the Russian S-400 anti-aircraft systems. In response, Washington canceled the scheduled sale of F-35 fighters in Ankara and excluded it from the joint aircraft production program.
Turkey then agreed to the F-16 fighter market.
