Britain’s foreign minister today warned Russia that its invasions of NATO countries are in danger of a direct armed conflict and that the alliance would be ready to face warplanes entering NATO airspace.
“Your reckless actions raise the risk of an immediate armed confrontation between NATO and Russia,” IVET Cooper told the United Nations Security Council.
“Our alliance is defensive, but rest assured that we are ready to defend the heavens and NATO territory.”
On Friday, Estonia reported that three Russian MIG-31 fighters entered its airspace without permission and remained for a total of 12 minutes, before they were forced to leave, in an episode that, according to Western officials, aimed to test its readiness and determination.
The Security Council met on Monday to discuss the issue, while NATO consultations are scheduled for Tuesday. The incident occurred shortly after more than 20 Russian drones into the Polish airspace, which led to the interception and downing of some of NATO fighters.
Cooper’s statements were also found by other Western ministers to the Security Council, who pointed out that the multiple incidents could not be considered an accident.
Russia’s Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Dmitry Polianaski, argued that there was no evidence to support the allegations and accused European forces of “unfounded” accusations.
“We will not participate in this theater of the absurd,” he said. “When you decide that you want to get involved in a serious debate on European security, the future of our common continent, how to make it prosperous and safe for everyone, then we will be ready.”
