Denmark does not plan to ask NATO to activate Article 4 of the North Atlantic Pact following the infiltrations of unmanned aircraft (drones) that resulted in a few airports for a few airports and affected military facilities earlier this week, the Foreign Minister said today.
Article 4 provides for consultations between the NATO allies if one of the Member States considers that there is a threat against him. “The sides consult each time, in the view of one of the sides, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of one of the sides are threatened.”.
Since the establishment of the Atlantic Alliance in 1949, nine times the article 4 has been invoked, the latter from Poland and Estonia after the reported violations of its airspace by Russian unmanned aircraft.
“Article 4 has been activated nine times throughout NATO history, and twice recently in relation to Poland and Estonia, so we have no reason to ask for its activation”Foreign Minister Lars Loke Rasmussen told reporters.
Danish Prime Minister Methe Fredericks linked the incident to the unmanned aircraft closed by Copenhagen Airport late Monday with suspicious activities of Russian unmanned aircraft across Europe, but without providing evidence.
Danish Foreign Minister also announced yesterday that the Scandinavian country would donate $ 2.7 billion to Danish crowns ($ 422.43 million) to Ukraine, a large part of which will be invested in Ukraine’s defense industry.
