After more than 9 months after its overthrow, Syria today issued an arrest warrant in absentia against former President Bashar al -Assad, paving the way for the transmission of the order to Interpol to allow international action.
Al Assad, who ruled Syria for more than two decades, went to Russia by air in December after a rebel coalition, led by Islamist Al Sarah, went to the capital Damascus.
The warrant reports accusations that include premeditated murder, torture that led to death and deprivation of freedom, according to the Sana state agency, and is based on lawsuits filed by families of victims in the southern Draa province for events that took place in November 2011.
In 2011, a peaceful uprising in favor of democracy broke out against Bashar al -Assad’s power, demanding political change. However, the government responded with violent repression. The situation soon became a complete conflict that resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and a huge disaster.
Hundreds of thousands of people ended up in prison, where they were tortured or disappeared, according to human rights.
“The court ruling opens the door to release the warrant through Interpol and to examine the case internationally,” said investor al Ali.
He added that the warrant was issued after a lawsuit filed by families of victims.
Syrian media reported that the Ministry of Justice issued the warrant on Thursday with charges that also included an attack aimed at incitement to civil war.
