Nine reached the confirmed dead after the collapse of Islamic boarding school in Java, Indonesia on Monday, according to the country’s National Disaster Management Agency.

Following the initial announcement of 5 victims, rescuers yesterday withdrew from the debris of 4 other corpses and the tragic report is expected to exceed 60 dead, as heavy machines have begun to move the rubble and concrete slabs.

Rescue crews are still looking for more than 59 people – most of them young boys aged 12 to 18 years – remaining under the ruins.

However, officials clarified yesterday that there was no longer a “sign of life”.

The al -Kozini school in the city of Shintozo, 780 kilometers east of Jakarta, collapsed while teenage students had gathered for the afternoon mosque prayer on a low floor, and the highest floor of the building were located.

According to the Disaster Management Service, 14 people are hospitalized after rescuing them.

In Indonesia, the most populous Muslim country in the world, there are a total of 42,000 Islamic boarding houses, where 7 million students attend.

Research has begun to clarify the causes of collapse and, according to the first estimates of experts, the boarding school building had structural problems and did not meet the building regulation.
