At least six people were killed to Philippines by the powerful earthquake of 7.4 Richter which hit the island state at dawn, 11 days after the 6.9 Richter earthquake left behind 74 dead and about 72,000 earthquakes on the central island of Tsebu.

The earthquake occurred about 20 kilometers off the coast of Manai on the southern island of Mindanao at 9:43 am Local time, according to the US Geological Survey Service (USGS).

The Philippine Institute of Hephaestology and Seismology had initially warned that a “devastating tsunami” was expected “with height waves that are likely to endanger lives” on the east coast of the archipelago.

A few hours later, the Pacific tsunami warning center (PTWC) released a tsunami warning of the Philippines, Palau and Indonesia.

The country’s President Ferdinand Markos said the authorities still assess the situation and the search and rescue services are preparing for the possibility of having to intervene.

The archipelago is located above the so -called “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific, where tectonic plates intersect and seismic and volcanic activity is intense. In the country there are more than 800 strong earthquakes on an average annual basis.
