Dead in Wakefield’s HMP prisons was found 48 -year -old former Lostprohpets singer Ian Watkins, who was sentenced to 29 years in prison for minors. West Yorkshire police said two men, aged 25 and 43, were arrested as suspected of murder.
Watkins was imprisoned in December 2013 for a series of crimes, as well as for an attempt rape infant.
Police said he was called to prison on Saturday morning following reports of a serious attack on a prisoner who was found dead at the incident.
A prison spokesman said he was aware of the incident in prison, but “he cannot comment further while the police investigation is ongoing.”
Watkins had been sentenced to 29 years in prison and more than six years under surveillance after his release, while his two co -defendants (mothers of children abused) were sentenced to 14 and 17 years in prison respectively.
He had been attacked in August 2023, but his life had not been threatened.
The attack on the Wakefield prison occurred less than two weeks after the publication of a report on the Foundation, which found that violence there had increased significantly.
The report of the Inspector General of Prison said: “Many detainees have told us that they feel insecure, especially the elderly men convicted of sexual crimes and now share prison with a growing number of younger prisoners.”
Watkins had confessed to attempted rape and sexual assault on a child under the age of 13, but was innocent of rape.
He also admitted the conspiracy to rape a child, three charges of sexual assault on children, seven charges of taking, creating or possessing obscene images of children, and a category for possession of extreme pornographic material that included sex with an animal.
The judges rejected his appeal in 2014 to reduce the sentence.
During the conviction, Judge Royce had stated: “This case opened new territories and plunged the horror to a new depths of perversion. Every decent man will feel shock, aversion and incredible distrust. “
The judge had also stressed that Watkins had a corrupt influence and had shown a complete lack of remorse.
Watkins was once one of the most recognizable musicians in Wales as the singer of the rock band Lostprophets. The band was formed on Pontypridd in 1997 and sold millions of albums worldwide. However, it was dissolved shortly after Watkins’ sentence in 2013.
The prosecutors described him as a man who was corrupted by reputation, drugs and power, someone who committed crimes “beyond any imagination”.
During his trial, it was heard that Watkins used his reputation to manipulate and control others, often under the influence of hard drugs, such as crystalline methamphetamine.
