Donald Trump’s telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin is ongoing, with the American president himself declaring that it is an extensive conversation.

He added that both he and Putin would update on the content of the conversation after its conclusion.

The phone call between the two leaders comes a day before Donald Trump welcomes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the White House where they will discuss the possibility of the US giving Ukraine long-range Tomahawk missiles.

Trump said last week that he told Zelensky that he might give Vladimir Putin a new ultimatum: Either Russia begins serious peace negotiations or Ukraine receives Tomahawk missiles.

In particular, Donald Trump told reporters on Sunday that during a phone conversation with Zelensky over the weekend, the possibility of the US delivering Tomahawk missiles and additional Patriot systems to Ukraine was raised. Zelensky argues that increasing Ukrainian firepower will force Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table.

At the same time, Trump said that he may have to “talk to Russia” about the Tomahawk issue, adding that he does not believe that Moscow would like to see such missiles against it and that he might raise the possibility of sending them as a means of pressure: “If this war is not resolved, I might send them Tomahawks,” he noted.

The long-range missiles would allow Ukraine to strike targets deep inside Russian territory, even in Moscow, which worries the Kremlin. The Russian side has expressed concern that some versions can also carry nuclear warheads, while Putin has stated that the use of such weapons would require the immediate involvement of US forces and would seriously jeopardize US-Russia relations.
