Floods and landslides that have hit central and eastern Mexico over the past ten days have killed 76 people and left 27 others missing, according to an updated government tally announced today.
The bad weather, with unusually heavy rainfall for several days, cut off 119 communities because roads were destroyed, according to the authorities’ report presented at the daily press briefing by the country’s president, Claudia Scheinbaum.
Rescue crews have not yet finished their work, Sheinbaum said, announcing that the first tranche of emergency financial aid, which will reach 466 million euros, has been given for about 100,000 families.
Most of the isolated communities, 65 in total, are in Hidalgo State, which borders the capital, because many of them are mountainous and roads were destroyed by landslides.
Veracruz, in the Gulf of Mexico, has also been hit hard. Many of its communities are criss-crossed by rivers that overflow within hours when the rain starts.
12,700 soldiers and marines have been deployed to the affected areas. Several airlifts have also been set up to send aid to the besieged communities.
