Captagon, a synthetic amphetamine produced illegally, became, according to Agence France-Presse, Syria’s main export product during the civil war that broke out in 2011. According to the same source, it was a major source of illegal financing of the former president’s power Bashar al-Assadwhich is said to have transformed Syria “in a narco-state”.

After the fall of his regime, the new de facto authorities have announced seizures of large quantities of Captagon. However, neighboring countries continue to report interceptions of large shipments.

The psychotropic drug flooded the region, prompting governments to demand from him Lebanon and the Syria to step up their efforts to combat trafficking.
