The USA and the Belize they signed yesterday Monday an agreement that provides that the small state of Central America will temporarily host immigrants seeking asylum from the American authorities, the two governments announced.
The government of Belize said on Facebook that it has reached an agreement with the US government that states asylum seekers in the US can be temporarily sent to this “safe third country” while their claims are being processed.
The agreement is “an important step to end illegal immigration, combat abuses of our nation’s asylum system, and strengthen our shared commitment to overcome challenges together in our hemisphere,” the State Department said.
The agreement, with a duration of two years, was signed in Belize by Francis Fonseca, the country’s foreign minister, and Catherine Beamer, the chargé d’affaires of the American embassy in the capital Belmopan.
The text, the details of which have not been disclosed, remains to be approved by the Central American state’s Senate.
Since returning to the White House in January, US President Donald Trump has launched a campaign to deport migrants and negotiated highly controversial deals to transfer them to third countries, from El Salvador to Uganda, South Sudan and Rwanda.
Already, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras and El Salvador have agreed to take in asylum seekers and/or immigrants deported by the US under similar agreements.
