The wife of the Palestinian leader Marwan Barghoutiwho has been in prison since 2002, called him Donald Trump to assist in his release at her announcement.
“Mr. President, a true partner awaits you – someone who can help realize our shared dream of a just and sustainable peace in the region,” writes Fadua Barbouti.
“For the freedom of the Palestinian people and peace (…) help for the release of Marwan Barghouti.”
Marwan Barghouti has been sentenced to life in prison for his role in the second Intifada in the early 2000s. He is considered a possible successor to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and is one of the rare figures who can build inter-Palestinian consensus. Israel has persistently denied his release.
On October 9, the Israel announced that there is no question of releasing Marwan Barghouti in the context of the exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners under the Gaza ceasefire agreement.
In an interview published in TIMETrump says he will “make a decision” on whether Israel should release Barghouti.
When asked about it today during his visit to Israel, Mr Marco Rubio stated that he has nothing new to say on the matter.
