Vilnius and Kaunas airports in Lithuania suspended operations on Friday night as weather balloons from Belarus entered the country’s airspace, the transport ministry said.

Lithuania’s prime minister has announced that both border crossings with Belarus will remain closed until midday Sunday due to increased security measures.

According to the relevant information, the operation of the two airports was suspended for security reasons at least until 22:00, after the radars detected “dozens of balloons”.

Vilnius airport was temporarily closed on Tuesday and October 5 when balloons containing contraband cigarettes were brought in from Lithuania.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene announced the closure of two border crossings with Belarus until noon on Sunday, as she had warned on Wednesday in case of a repeat of such incidents.

The operation of several European airports has been disrupted in recent weeks, mainly by drones of unknown origin.
