Defense lawyers for Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro filed a petition on Monday to review last month’s Supreme Court ruling that sentenced him to more than 27 years in prison for plotting a coup to stay in power after the 2022 presidential election.

In the 85-page petition filed in court, Bolsonaro’s lawyers challenged parts of the sentence, including the length of the former president’s prison term, according to a report by Reuters.

In September, four of the five judges of the Supreme Court panel voted to convict Bolsonaro of five crimes, including participating in an armed criminal organization, attempting to violently overthrow democracy and organizing a coup.

Typically, defendants convicted by Brazil’s Supreme Court need at least two judges to dissent from the ruling in order to file an appeal that could significantly change the decision.

With only one judge dissenting, Bolsonaro’s lawyers filed a legally “weaker” motion that calls for specific parts of the sentence to be clarified or reconsidered.

Bolsonaro, who denies any wrongdoing, will only begin serving his sentence when appeals against his conviction are exhausted.

However, he has been under house arrest since August due to illness, and as it appears the case has also been influenced by the US president Donald Trumpwhich raised tariffs on imports of Brazilian products to 50% and imposed sanctions on the judge overseeing the case.
