An avalanche swept away climbers in eastern Nepal today, leaving at least three dead and four others missing, a local official told AFP.
The accident occurred on Mount Yalung Ri (5,630 m), said Gyan Kumar Mahato, a senior police officer in the Dholakha district. He said two of the dead were Nepalis and the third a foreigner, as were the missing climbers, but did not specify their nationalities.
Bad weather conditions in the area are hampering the search and rescue operation, which will continue on Tuesday morning, Mahato said.
Nepal is home to eight of the world’s ten highest mountain peaks, attracting climbers and trekkers from every corner of the globe. Autumn Himalayan expeditions are less popular due to adverse weather conditions.
Last week, Cyclone Montha caused heavy rains and snowfall in Nepal, stranding many tourists in parts of the Himalayas. Authorities also said the fate of two Italian climbers who were attempting to scale a peak in western Nepal was unknown.
