He emphasized the need to make progress, however, and said that “for 12-13 years we have been talking about EastMed until the Americans told us it was going nowhere. “I do not think any of us were surprised, but if that does not come as a surprise, let’s think of other alternatives.”

“It’s time to make some progress,” he said, stressing that if Europe were to be honest about its rhetoric about the need to diversify its gas supplies, it would have to translate that rhetoric into action.

In this context, he referred to the important role that Egypt plays in the field of energy, noting that this country is a partner, a key player.

He even referred to the recent summit of Israel, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates in Sharm el-Sheikh, where these issues were discussed at length, noting that energy is not limited to tripartite cooperation or the 3 + 1 initiative, with the participation of the United States. , “But there are specific regional dimensions to it.”
