Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced federal elections on Sunday (May 21st), beginning the battle to stay in power after a term marked by the natural disasters and pandemic of the new coronavirus.
“This election is about you, you and no one else,” said the Conservative prime minister, who, according to opinion polls, is in danger of losing.
Australians will be invited to nominate members of Parliament and half of the Senate.
Mr Morrison, who hopes to become the first prime minister to secure a second term in office after John Howard in 2004, has been far behind the Labor Party since June 2021.
Scott Morrison took office after the insurgency against Malcolm Turnbull’s predecessor.
Nine months later, the conservative coalition he led remained in power with an election victory that disproved all predictions, as most polls predicted a victory for the center-left Labor Party.
