Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed a new general to lead the Russian army in Ukraine after failures in Kyiv and a change in Moscow’s plans, an American and a European official told CNN.
Officials say it is Alexander Dvornikov, commander of Russia’s Southern Military District.
“This shows the Russians’ admission that they are doing extremely badly and that they have to do something different,” he said.
The young general with extensive experience on the battlefield could coordinate the attack, which is now expected to focus on the Donbas area, instead of multiple fronts.
Dvornikov, 60, was the first commander of Russian military operations in Syria since Putin’s troops were sent there in September 2015 to support the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
During Dvornikov’s rule in Syria from September 2015 to June 2016, Russian aircraft supported the Assad regime and its allies as they besieged rebel-held eastern Aleppo, bombing densely populated neighborhoods and large neighborhoods. . The city fell into the hands of Syrian government forces in December 2016.
