Ukraine: Agreement to open nine humanitarian corridors for evacuation of civilians

Kyiv agreed to use nine humanitarian corridorsto help citizens escape the violent clashes in the eastern part of the country, including the evacuation of civilians by private vehicles from Mariupol, said today the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, Irina Verestsuk.

“All routes to the humanitarian corridors in the Luhansk region will be operational as long as there is a ceasefire by the Russian occupation troops,” Verestsuk told the Telegram.

In eastern Ukraine, calls by Ukrainian officials for civilians to leave the area became even more urgent on Friday following a rocket attack on a city train station. Kramatorskin the Donetsk region, which was full of women, children and the elderly trying to leave.

Ukrainian officials say more than 50 people have been killed in the attack, for which Russia has denied responsibility, saying the missiles used in the attack were used only by the Ukrainian army. The United States has said no Russian forces are responsible.

The mayor of Kramatorsk, Alexander Honsarenko, said he estimated that only 50,000 to 60,000 of the city’s 220,000 residents would remain there.

Meanwhile, the governor of Luhansk, Sergi Gaidai, announced in a message to the Telegram that its residents will have at their disposal nine trains today to remove them from this region that is besieged by Russian forces.
