Some 44,000 Ukrainian refugees have now been added to the more than 4.5 million people who have already fled their country since Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered an invasion of Ukraineaccording to its data High Commissioner for Refugees (HCR).
The HCR today registered exactly 4,547,735 Ukrainian refugees. They are 44,781 more than the previous count on Sunday.
About it 90% of those who have left Ukraine are women and childrenas the Ukrainian authorities do not allow men of conscription age to leave the country.
“We are very concerned, not only about the safety of these people, but also about assessing their own needs: money, health, care, food, accommodation and even clothes.”he stated the head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Antonio Vitorino on CNN.
Asked if people choose to stay or be trapped, Vittorino explained that there are two cases. “We have people who continue to be victims of Russian military aggression who are preventing them from moving, and there are those who remain because they hope – as we all hope – that this war will end as soon as possible.”
According to the IOM, some 210,000 non-Ukrainians have also fled the country, sometimes having difficulty getting to their country of origin.
The UN also estimates on 7.1 million the number of internally displaced personsaccording to the data published by the IOM on April 5.
In all, more than 11 million people, or more than a quarter of the population, have fled their homes, either crossing borders to go to neighboring countries or finding refuge in other parts of Ukraine.
