British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Finance Secretary Rishi Sunak will be fined for holding parties during the lockdown period, a Downing Street spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
“The prime minister and the finance secretary have received notification that the Metropolitan Police intends to fine them,” the spokeswoman said. Earlier, London police had already applied 20 punishments related to parties held in Boris’ office and residence.
The celebrations violated confinement restrictions due to the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, and the publicity of the parties put pressure on the prime minister and generated a series of resignation requests, including from fellow Conservative Party members. The recipients of the fines were not identified at the time.
The punishment for participating in meetings with more than 15 people in the lockdown is 800 pounds (R$ 5,000).
