Shanghai: Record with 27,000 cases despite the hard lockdown

by

China’s economic hub, Shanghai, said over 27,000 cases of coronavirus on Thursday, setting a new record a day after President Xi Jinping said the country must continue to strict “dynamic clearance of COVID” policy and pandemic control measures.

The city is battling China’s worst COVID-19 epidemic since the Wuhan virus first appeared in late 2019, with a population of 25 million. to remain largely under lockdownalthough restrictions have been partially eased in some areas this week.

Hoping for policy change, China Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a guide on Wednesday for quarantine at home on social media.

According to the strict rules of China, even asymptomatic people should be quarantined at headquarterswhere many people have reported bad conditions.

The CDC guidelines for quarantine at home – in a well-ventilated room equipped with masks, disinfectant and other equipment – raised expectations that the quarantine rule at government facilities can relax.

However, when asked by a social media user about who might be suitable for quarantine at homethe CDC referred to the old rules.

Shanghai authorities also gave no indication of any change in approach during a briefing on Thursday.

On Thursday, Shanghai reported a record 2,573 cases for the previous day, from 1,189 the previous day, while asymptomatic cases reached 25,146, from 25,141.

A city official said that cases continued to rise despite the lockdown partly due to the accumulation of test results and the ongoing transmission between family members.

On Wednesday, Xi said China must adhere to its strict “dynamic liquidation of COVID” policy, while the global pandemic remains very serious, promising that persistence will win in the end.

Speaking during a visit to Hainan Island in southern China, Xi said that there will be no immediate change in approach to pandemic control measuresSaying that the country must stick to its approachwhich has closed China ‘s borders to international travel rather than relaxing measures.

China’s COVID-19 zero policy is increasingly being challenged from the rapidly spreading Omicron variant, putting millions of people in various forms of lockdown and interrupting supply chainswhile other countries have rejected the restrictions, although the virus is still spreading.

An April 7 study by Gavekal Dragonomics found that 87 of China’s 100 largest cities by GDP have imposed some form of quarantine.

Authorities in the northeastern province of Jilin, which has been hit by the coronavirus, said on Thursday they had eliminated the local spread of COVID-19 following a battle to reduce cases since mid-March.
