Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today handed over a completed questionnaire on his country’s accession to the European Union as a Brussels envoy and expressed confidence that this step would lead to Ukraine being granted EU candidate status in the coming weeks.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen handed over the questionnaire to Zelensky during her visit to Kyiv on April 8, promising to speed up the process of Ukraine’s accession to the EU after the Russian invasion of the country.
Zelensky handed over the completed questionnaire to the EU envoy to Ukraine, at a time when he was immortalized in a video released by the Ukrainian government.
“We firmly believe that this process (of granting EU candidate status) will take place in the coming weeks and will be positive for the history of our people, given the price it paid on its path to independence and freedom.” , said the President of Ukraine.
Earlier in the day, the deputy head of the Ukrainian presidency’s office said that Ukraine could be granted EU candidate status at a scheduled European Council meeting in June.
The European Commission should first give an opinion on whether Ukraine meets the criteria to join the EU.
As a candidate country, Ukraine will then enter into negotiations to align its legislation with the legal framework of the European Union.
