The EU is increasing its assistance to Mozambique’s armed forces

by

The European Union (EU) announced on Thursday the increase in financial support for the armed forces of Mozambique, a country facing jihadist activity in its northern part, in a European Council press release representing the 27 leaders.

The additional aid of 45 million euros increases the support that has been decided to be granted, within the framework of the “European Peace Facility”, to 89 million euros from November 2021, it is specified in the press release.

It is intended to fund the equipment – individual and unit level – of the eleven Mozambican Army battalions participating in the EU Training Mission (EUTM) program in Mozambique, which received the green light in 2021.

When the mission began, the EU said it was counting “about 140 troops, divided into two training centers, one for commandos and the other for naval riflemen”.

Northern Mozambique has been plagued by jihadist violence since late 2017.

Supporting the Mozambican Armed Forces, Rwanda and other countries of the Southern African Development Community (KAMA) have deployed more than 3,000 troops since July 2021 in the predominantly Muslim area, which borders Tanzania.
