UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will travel to Russia next week, where he will be received by President Vladimir Putin in their first meeting since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Kremlin announced today.
“On Tuesday, April 26, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will arrive in Moscow for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. “He will also be received by President Vladimir Putin,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.
Guterres on Wednesday separately asked Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to meet to discuss steps to be taken to achieve peace.
For her part, a spokeswoman for the UN chief, Eri Kaneko, confirmed that Guterres would visit Moscow on Tuesday, where he would meet with the Russian president.
According to Kaneko, Guterres will also have a meeting and a working lunch with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
