French Press: Osman Kavala sentenced to life in Turkey after parody

by

Osman Kavalas sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday of the French press.

“Businessman Osman Kavala was sentenced to life in prison after a mock trial in Turkey “, the newspaper Le Monde reports, noting that the Council of Europe has already initiated the procedure for violation of European Law due to Turkey’s refusal to comply, from 2019, with a decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) requesting the liberation of Kavala. According to the newspaper, the Strasbourg judges had ruled that his prolonged detention, without trial, betrayed Ankara’s desire to “silence him” and “with him all human rights defenders”.

“By refusing to comply with the ECHR decision, the Turkish government, which has signed the European Convention on Human Rights, is violating its international obligations,” the paper concludes.

The businessman’s conviction provoked strong international criticism, including from the United States, the Council of Europe, and Amnesty International.
