Nelson de Sá: British say ‘Russia can win’ and demand military escalation

by

In a video published by the Wall Street Journal, Reuters and others, in announcing more weapons against Russia, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken declared that “Russia is failing.”

But the following afternoon, on Tuesday (26), the Washington Post’s headline was “Time is not on Ukraine’s side, says US general.” In another text, just below, “anonymous military official” added that “the weight is on the Russian side” of the scale.

It was an argument to demand more European arms against Russia, but it echoed something that has been leaking insistently in the London press. In the Times, on the 21st, “Russia can still win, warns Western intelligence”:

A day later, by British, Indian and other newspapers, Prime Minister Boris Johnson was asked on a visit to India whether Russia could still win and replied: “Yes, of course, Putin has a great army. We have to be realistic.” .

The Guardian then charged the US, Germany and France in a column: “As terrible as it sounds, Putin can win. Who will provide direct military support? Sending weapons is not enough.”

Finally, in the headline of the Times on Tuesday (26), “Ukraine can use British weapons to hit Russian territory, says minister” of the United Kingdom’s armed forces.

LETTER OF ATTORNEY

A day after declaring that the US aims to “weaken” Russia, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin gave an interview to Fox News and was asked “Is this turning into a proxy war?” with Ukraine fighting in place of Washington. Response:

“It’s not. Ukraine’s allies are stepping up to make it successful… To be clear, we’re not in a fight with Russia.”

AUSTIN & RAYTHEON

Per the Financial Times and others, Austin made a new US announcement: “We will continue to move heaven and earth to strengthen the arsenal of Ukrainian democracy.”

In the same FT, soon after, came the news that Raytheon, which makes the main weapons sent to Ukraine, such as the Javelin missile, reported poor numbers, but “long-term confidence, supported by the return of growing defense budgets”.

FROM BIDEN TO BOLSONARO

Known for the 2014 change of government in Ukraine, Victoria Nuland, US Undersecretary of State, met with Brazilian officials (above) and tweeted that “USA and Brazil unite to promote democracy“, also speaking to Reuters.

The visit follows actions by Joe Biden himself, posing with the ambassador in Washington and talking about paying the Brazilian government to protect the Amazon.
