Ukraine announced on Wednesday that it was facing “extremely difficult weeks” in the face of the Russian military, which “has already mobilized forces for a major offensive in the east” of the country, which is a priority for Moscow.
“Extremely difficult weeks await us,” Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov warned in a statement posted on Facebook, urging Ukrainians to show “strength and unity” after more than two months of conflict with Russia.
“Unfortunately, we will lose more soldiers before we win (the war),” he added, adding that “there will be more damage and more casualties.”
He said the Russian military, already aware of its defeat strategy, would try to inflict as much suffering as possible on Ukrainian soldiers, whom Reznikov urged to “hold fast”.
Earlier in the day, the Ukrainian military acknowledged that Russian forces had advanced into eastern Ukraine, occupying several areas in the Kharkiv region and inside Donbass.
On April 18, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the start of a Russian offensive against the eastern part of the country, part of which has been under the control of pro-Russian separatists since 2014 and is now Moscow’s primary target.
“Implementation of the agreements (with foreign countries), training and development of logistics infrastructure will take some time,” Reznikov said, adding, however, that “aid to Ukraine will increase” in the coming days, he said.
