Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made an “opening” to Emanuel Macron on Saturday, describing the defeat of Marin Le Pen in the second round of last Sunday’s French presidential election as a “victory”.
“The elimination and defeat of extremist views in the French elections is, I think, a victory, “Everything we suffer is caused by extremism,” he told reporters on a plane returning from a trip to Saudi Arabia.
“I hope that with the result of these elections, our relations (with France) will be in a much better position,” the Turkish president continued.
In recent years, Erdogan has repeatedly clashed with his French counterpart, accusing him of “leading a hate campaign” against Muslims when the French president defended the freedom of cartoons, while the Turkish president challenged the French government’s struggle against the French government. .
The Turkish president had reached the point in 2020 of expressing his hope to see France to “get rid” of Macron “as soon as possible”.
Le Pen, which claims to want to “fight Islamist ideology” and says it is “in favor of banning the Islamic headscarf in public”, lost to outgoing President Emanuel Macron, but garnered 41.45% of the vote, a historic performance for the French far right.
