Spain: Pegasus spyware detected on PM, Defense Secretary’s cell phones

by

The Spanish authorities located the Pegasus spyware on the mobile phones of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Defense Minister Margarita Robles, said today the Prime Minister of the Spanish Government, Felix Bolanos.

Bolanos stressed in a press conference that he gave that Sanchez’s phone was infected with this software in May 2021 and at least one data leakage was recorded then. The Spanish official did not say who could spy on the prime minister or whether there were any suspicious foreign or Spanish groups behind it.

“The interventions were illegal and external. “External means were used by unofficial bodies and without state permission,” he said, adding that these infections had been reported to the Ministry of Justice and that the Supreme Court would have jurisdiction over the case.

The announcement followed intense pressure on the coalition government to give explanations after the Canadian Citizen Lab reported that more than 60 people associated with the Catalan separatist movement were its targets. of the Israeli NSO group’s Pegasus spy software.

Following allegations of espionage by members of the Catalan separatist movement, the main ally of the minority government in Parliament, the left-wing Catalan Independence Party (ERC), has stated that it will not support the government until Madrid takes steps to restore confidence.

Gabriel Roufian, an MP and spokesman for the ERC, said on Twitter: “The state has been spying, spying and will spy.”
