German Finance Minister: European embargo on Russian oil very likely

by

Economy Minister Robert Habeck called a European embargo on Russian oil imports “very likely” after a meeting of the European Union’s emergency energy council.

“After the German ‘yes’ to the ban on oil imports from Russia, the European debate is gaining momentum,” Mr Habeck said in a recent news release on German public television ARD, but that no agreement had been reached at European Union level. He himself, he noted, will submit a proposal for a new package of sanctions tomorrow. “It will definitely contain some oil,” he said.

Regarding Hungary’s refusal to support a possible oil embargo, Mr Habek said it was “common practice to find clever ways to persuade even the most unruly members” and expressed confidence that this would happen tomorrow. He even hinted that the compromise proposal could provide for a transitional period, until the beginning of 2023 or some exceptions. “There is a broad consensus within the EU that there will be public disagreements over sanctions against Russia,” he said.

However, Robert Hubeck admitted that a possible oil embargo would affect Germany as well, with rising prices. “But it’s important to impose it, because we will get rid of a little bit of the moral guilt that with our payments we are keeping the Putin regime alive,” he said.
